A skyscraper will be erected near the Empire State Building, a project supported by the City of New York, but shocks the owners of the legendary monument, worried they do her shadow. Yet the new building will have only 67 floors and 370 meters high, 102 floors and cons 381 meters for the famous art deco building built in 1931. With support from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the project was finally approved on Wednesday afternoon by the City Council met in plenary session, by 47 votes for and one against. Symbol of New York like the Statue of Liberty, Central Park or the Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building is a skyscraper above the city since the attacks of September 11, 2001, which destroyed the towers of the World Trade Center. It is visited annually by hundreds of thousands of tourists, and lights every night in different ways to celebrate holidays, birthdays or victories. The owners of this national landmark, located at the corner of 5th Avenue and 34th Street, have therefore been very critical of the proposed construction of an office building of 67 storeys to two blocks on the same 34th Street, opposite the great Penn Station. "This is not to prohibit tall buildings, but to preserve the unique character of the urban landscape," said the owner of the Empire State Building, Anthony Malkin, asking the City Council to readjust the project. On Wednesday, the case has dominated the agenda of the day: the initiative was approved by 8 votes in favor and two abstentions in the morning by a subcommittee, then applauded by 19 votes and cons by a committee prior to the overwhelming vote of City Council. For Anthony Malkin, the new building, designed by the architectural firm Pelli Clarke Pelli, will overshadow the masterpiece of art deco, even if it will be 11 meters less than the Empire State Building. "This will be a great contribution to the evolution of the city, and Penn Station is one of the most important stations in the world," replied Michael Bloomberg, who recalled that since the late nineteenth century, urbanization in Manhattan was dominated by competition "welcome" from developers in order to build ever more beautiful and higher. The Empire State Building will be also much longer the skyscraper the tallest New York: a new skyscraper, One World Trade Center, is under construction at Ground Zero, Manhattan.
