Cushman is owned by Textron Inc. Textron also owns other car companies such as Cessna, Bell Helicopter and EZ-GO golf carts. Cushman's company operated from 1903-2003. Until 1936 produced the engines for farm equipment, pumps, lawn mowers and boats. From 1936-1965 was the motor scooters, widely used by U.S. Military in World War II and as an alternative to automobiles in the years before and after the war. After motor scooter stopped production, manufactured Cushman golf carts, industrial vehicles and equipment lawn. The most successful model Cushman scooter, eagle, was produced for about 16 years. It resembled motorcycles with engines and cover exposed tanks. Other Cushman models used a traditional step-through common design for most Vespa scooters and used by developing their iconic range. Some Cushmans late 50s, said King of the road and pacemakers, jet-age brought a body styled like the cars of that era. Sears sold a version of these models under the Allstate brand. One of the most famous Cushmans was the model 53, a military model from the era of World War II. It was designed to be dropped by parachute with Army Airborne troops, so it became known as the Cushman Airborne. They were also used around military bases for messenger service. Cushman Trucksters was produced from 1958-2002. Small and low power have been used in a variety of uses for mobile ice cream sales, mall and stadium maintenance crews, the police uses about the uses of meter maid and patrol the parking, most famously in New York City. Cushmans was easy to assemble. They offered an automatic clutch which allowed the rider twisted the right grip to go and walk on the pedal to stop. Strangely, twisted the throttle forward to accelerate, the reverse of the usual pattern. Step-through design and ease of use became popular among men and women alike. Cushman claimed 75 miles per gallon, and said operating expenses of the penny-a-mile. Cushman scooters generally weighed about 250-335 pounds and some had as much as 9 horsepower. Production ended in 1965, only some spare eagles were sold as 1966 models.
